(How did they know this? Well, they chewed 13 gum samples, stuck them to outdoor pavement, and monitored them over 12 weeks, of course.) When gum is first stuck to the pavement, it largely boasts oral bacteria, but over time this is replaced by bacteria from the environment.īut the oral bacteria stuck around for a surprisingly long time, the team says in their paper in Scientific Reports. They were particularly interested in how the bacteria changed over time. Leila Satari and her colleagues at the University of Valencia in Spain collected 10 chewy samples from France, Greece, Spain, Turkey and Singapore, froze them, and ground them into powder for analysis. The ecology prize was awarded to researchers who used genetic analysis to figure out which species of bacteria lived in wads of gum left stuck on the pavement in five different countries.Ĭredit: Juan Camilo Bernal / Getty Images Our mouths contain a lot of different types of bacteria, and you never know where someone else’s mouth has been.īut one study aimed to find out. If you’ve ever stepped on or accidentally touched a piece of used chewing gum, you probably reacted with disgust – for good reason. “These results imply that avoidance manoeuvres are normally a cooperative process and that mutual anticipation between pedestrians facilitates efficient pattern formation.” 4. “Both the distracted pedestrians and the non-distracted ones had difficulties avoiding collisions while navigating,” the team writes in Science Advances – though distraction did slow down walking speed. They conducted an experiment where some pedestrians were asked to walk while using their phones, and others without, to see whether distraction interfered with their ability to anticipate and react to their neighbours’ motions. The team argues that anticipation is a big part of the reason – that pedestrians don’t just navigate based on where others are, but where they anticipate others soon will be. The study that took out the kinetics prize, on the other hand, looked into why pedestrians do actually sometimes collide with others. “While in motion, pedestrians adapt their walking paths trying to preserve mutual comfort distances and to avoid collisions,” the authors explain. The physics prize went to a bit of research that explains why pedestrians aren’t constantly smacking into each other, using models to look at the interactions between people walking in crowds. We’re cheating a bit here, because two equally interesting studies about the physics of foot traffic were awarded prizes. Why pedestrians don’t collide…and also why they do We’ve ranked our top five for your reading pleasure. This year, the pickings are particularly hilarious.

So then when I moved on again to non-iOS work I had fallen for the Jetbrains approach, so mostly used IntelliJ. I disliked that enough that I tried and enjoyed the only real alternative - Jetbrains' AppCode. I stopped because at the time I moved almost exclusively into iOS work, which mostly meant XCode. Also I don't always work as a programmer - so sometimes, returning to the field after a few years away, I start afresh with new tools. Well I don't use the 'switch' term - cliches cloud thought, and I've only at some points in my programming life used a single editor for everything, and for me it's been more a pragmatic journey than anxious 'switch'. The advantage is that it is portable and I can find my environment on any computer just by copying a folder. It took me a few years before I started messing with my Emacs configuration. It's a bit of a thankless task but not that difficult or incomprehensible. You also don't need to configure your IDE from the start. I also use Atom a bit for some tasks but it's more rare. Back to Emacs with which I have too many habits and a long love affair. I tried VS Code as well but did not enjoy the experience. For example, for a long time I ignored Emacs' natural keyboard shortcuts for moving the cursor, preferring to use the arrow keys until I felt the need to use them and felt that I was doing my job more efficiently. Some features may seem useless to you until you have a suitable use for them. The goal is not to become an Emacs superhero but to gain confidence and efficiency. I've been using Emacs for over 20 years and I'm still discovering new features. Only change if you feel real need and progress with another tool. and second off, the people who are coming out always to bash on the people who bother to learn and optimize their tools to prepare for a lifetime of software development generally aren't people who simply chose a different tool. but, first off, I'm betting at that point you are going to have gotten really good at using notepad, along with all of the little warts of how it interacts with Explorer. Like, if you want to tell me "I use nothing but notepad, and I'm a god at it" I'm going to be "holy hell yeah, I want to feast my eyes upon this marvel". and I certainly lose all sympathy when these same people actively defend this insanity by saying they don't think it makes sense to "waste time" "over-engineering" their text editor setup. I'm somewhat less cool if you are telling me how awesome IntelliJ is this year after trying to get me to use Eclipse on your last project but are now looking at VSCode as an alternative because you are sick of switching between this stack and Xcode and P圜harm after you stopped just trying to use Sublime for everything. I'm totally cool if you want to use IntelliJ. Get fluent with each new item before moving on to the next. Sort the list once a week to keep it fresh, and just pick the next item to configure/learn. With reasonable fluency established, just keep a note in which to jot down what's missing compared to your IDE, and pick them off, one-by-one, over time. In the first week or two, go through enough basic tutorials to be able to do essential editing with their basic keybindings without plugins. If it slows you down too much for practicality to start with, limit its use (to an an hour a day, or to a side project), but stick with it for the full period regardless. Your 1-2 weeks just isn't enough - I'd say 2 months at least. Pick one using your preferred criteria, and commit to it for a period. Emacs and vim/nvim are great and will serve you well if one matches your preferences. If self-attestations were relevant, then everything (from quack medicines to cult healing methods to levitation) would be true, because everything has more utterly self-convinced dataless self-attestations than you could absorb in all a bodhisattva's recalled lifetimes.Ģ. Ignore antiempirical self-attestations to the contrary - they're entertaining but informationally worthless. Some use a mouse in one hand and do keyboard shortcuts in the other. Others who have a fully tricked-out emacs who dream in org mode. There are world-class developers who do everything in a vanilla Sublime Text. There are marvellously 'productive' developers using every editor under the sun, and neither the quality nor quantity of their work is strongly related to their choice of editor. A couple of suggestions (in no particular order, and from an ex-Emacs/Xcode/Jetbrains/VSCode and current nvim user):ġ. Tremendous thanks and appreciation to all of you. English Dictionary is another one of the better free dictionary apps for Android users. Since this dictionary went up, it has benefited from the suggestions of dozens of people I have never met, from around the world. This should be taken as approximate, especially before about 1700, since a word may have been used in conversation for hundreds of years before it turns up in a manuscript that has had the good fortune to survive the centuries. The dates beside a word indicate the earliest year for which there is a surviving written record of that word (in English, unless otherwise indicated). Etymologies are not definitions they're explanations of what our words meant and how they sounded 600 or 2,000 years ago.
Press your sit bones down and lengthen your spine as best you can.Īs you exhale, draw your belly button into your spine and twist to your right, holding onto the arm or back of your chair. Then, lift your chin parallel to the floor and guide your ears back over your shoulders. Keep your knees directly above your ankles. Sit in your chair with your feet flat and parallel. This one provides a great “squeeze” for the muscles and decompresses that aching lower back. If you have a lot of tension along your spine, this movement can burn a bit, but it will definitely loosen things up. To add more of a stretch in the lower back, tilt the pelvis forward, but make sure to do this very gently if your lower back is particularly sore, sensitive, or in pain. Starting with both feet on the floor and a straight spine, begin at the crown of your head, and roll down vertebrae by vertebrae. Really, you don’t need to go all the way to the floor as the woman in the video does above you can simply stop and breathe anywhere along the way. It’s a take on the spinal roll-down stretch, but can simply be done while seated instead of going all the way down to the floor. Breathe deeply, in and out, into the stretch, and switch sides when you’re ready. The greater the flex of the heel, the more the stretch in the hamstrings, and the greater the release of the lower back. Flex your foot and simply stretch it out in front of you. Holding onto the edge of your desk, sit up straight with your knees pointed forward and both feet on the floor. So easy, and so wonderfully inconspicuous. Here are a few movements to get you started. Vernikos’ recommendation? Don’t stay in one position too long! Even if you’re stuck at your desk, keep yourself moving around and stretching as much as possible. Neat, right? She added that, when you sit a lot, “the muscles have weakened and the vertebrae start collapsing, squeezing the padding and nerves between the discs. This is also happening when you sit for a long period of time.īasically, being at work all day is… kind of like being an astronaut. But when astronauts return from space or people get out of bed, their vertebrae collapse onto each other and cause pain. In space, you get taller by one to two inches, and if you lay in bed, you’ll also get taller, because your discs are expanding. While I have definitely -and shamelessly - been that person, I know you’re probably on the lookout for some low-key sitting stretches for lower back pain you can do at your desk without making it look like you’re preparing for a Hamilton audition in your cubicle.įirst of all, what exactly is going on in your back when you’re sitting at your desk all day to make it ache like that? Joan Vernikos, a former NASA scientist and author of Designed to Move: The Science-Backed Program to Fight Sitting Disease and Enjoy Lifelong Health, told Thrillist that she discovered that prolonged sitting can lead to the same negative health effects on the body - like muscle and bone degeneration and soreness - that astronauts experience after being in microgravity: When you’re sitting, your spine is compressing. You’re practically cringing in pain, but you don’t necessarily want to be that person at the office who just busts out a downward dog next to the water cooler. You’re at your desk at work, and your lower back begins to send shooting pain all the way up to your neck. 5 Sitting Stretches For Lower Back Pain That You Can Do At Your Desk Love the system and plan on getting another C1 camera, in the future, to be used as a nursery camera. Overall though, I use this as a nice back up to my Abode alarm system and it gives me the ability to remotely check on any unexpected status changes or alarm activations. Even when the sensitivity levels are decreased and you adjust the field of sensitivity. As other users have stated, if you turn motion notification on you will be getting messages all the time. This really is more of a Reolink issue though and not the apps fault. The only reason I gave it 4, instead of 5, stars is because of the motion sensing capability. If you want to specifically see a certain time it can be difficult fine tuning the playback to where you want because you have to use a finicky slider to get to the time you are looking for. Controlling the playback is the hardest part. Video playback within the app is ok but could be better. The video and audio quality is amazing but that is going to differ depending on your personal internet speeds. It was very easy to connect my cameras to the app and I find it much easier to control their settings through the app then through the NVR. This app has met my expectations ever since install.
